  33. Do You Know Your Native VS Non-Native Plants? QUIZ | TreePeople
Here in Southern California, the work that TreePeople does - especially in the surrounding mountains and wildland areas - involves restoring the land to a state in which native plant species can thrive and help the land. In fact, our native plants that have evolved with our ecosystems are more fire resilient and have better chances of surviving wildfires (see example here). This means we spend a lot of time removing non-native, invasive species from our planting sites.
  34. How Well do you know TreePeople? QUIZ | TreePeople

Rain Barrels Did you know that for every inch of rain that falls on Los Angeles, 3.8 BILLION gallons of runoff flows to the ocean? That's water that we could capture to be more climate-resilient! People have collected rainwater for thousands of years, all around the world. After all, water falls from the sky for free! Capturing it not only saves money, but also helps make a positive impact by conserving precious drinking water.

  71. What is a Cistern? | TreePeople
Our region faces longer periods of drought and more intense storms, but you can make a difference! Be part of the new LA landscape and install a cistern to fight drought and adapt to our new climate reality. Cisterns and rain barrels are both rain tanks used to store captured rainwater. Smaller tanks (rain barrels) typically store around 55 gallons of water. Larger tanks (cisterns) store 200 gallons or more. They can be both above or under ground. The average home cistern stores 800 - 1500 gallons.

    • Lessons from Australia | TreePeople
Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent. Between 1997 and 2010 it faced an unprecedented dry spell, known as the "Millennium Drought," in which lakes and reservoirs turned to dust. Thankfully, the country emerged from the epic dry spell stronger and more water-resilient –thanks to action taken by its people and governments. In light of California's current water crisis, TreePeople has been studying Australia's success to develop and implement a sustainable approach to the water crisis in our own city.

    • Policy & Research Work | TreePeople
Transforming LA into a sustainable city takes more than grassroots change—our government needs to create policies that meet our environmental challenges.
    • What We Do | TreePeople
TreePeople inspires and supports the people of LA to come together to plant and care for trees, harvest the rain, and renew depleted landscapes. We unite with communities to grow a greener, shadier and more water-secure city at homes, neighborhoods, schools and in the local mountains. We work with volunteer leaders using our unique Citizen Forester model, and we influence government agencies for a healthy, thriving Los Angeles.
    • Why It Matters | TreePeople
LA is rich in natural beauty. But along the way, we've over-paved this paradise. Many LA neighborhoods are almost completely covered in asphalt and concrete and sorely lacking trees and nature.  On hot days, scorching surfaces bake in the heat, endangering people’s health. Our streams and rivers are paved over, so that when it rains, water can't soak into the ground where it could add to our aquifers. Instead, it runs off into our ocean, sweeping trash and pollution onto our beaches.

    • Participe: Haga Trabajo Voluntario | TreePeople
